100 People: an Intersection of Art and Mysticism

Mark Stockton's 100 People is a captivating collection of 100 skillfully hand-drawn graphite portraits, whose subjects establish a profound connection with viewers through their intense gaze and direct eye contact. These works remind us that portraits are more than static representations —  they can venerate, forge emotional bonds, and resonate deeply within our lives.

Stockton's visionary approach to his work led to the creation of a custom set of 100 printed cards, reminiscent of a tarot deck. The tarot, steeped in symbolism and metaphysical traditions, harmonizes naturally with Stockton's portraiture. In the 100 People deck, each card embodies a unique persona, inviting us to explore the human experience from visual and mystical perspectives.

During his exhibition at Chimaera Gallery, Stockton collaborated with Roskana Filipowska, a third-generation tarot reader and art historian, whose expertise in tarot and artist card decks added a unique depth to this exhibition. Filipowska's passion for revealing the symbolism within each portrait complemented Stockton's visionary work. The tarot readings she conducted with the 100 People deck guided viewers on a journey of introspection and self-discovery.

In this video, Roskana Filipowska provides Mark Stockton with a personalized tarot reading based on the portraits he created. This unique encounter exemplifies art's power to transcend boundaries, spark introspection, and unveil hidden dimensions of the human experience.
