The Nest Alchemy series research is in collaboration with Dr. Jennifer Swann Ph D and Dr. Julie Miwa PhD and the Neuro Salon program at Lehigh University. In 2020 Deirdre and Dr. Swann received a Humanities Lab grant to explore the connection between art and neuroscience. The connection between neurons and nests grew out of this intellectual dialogue and experimentation. Dr. Ramon y Cajal, Nobel Prize winner and father of neuroscience is a strong guide. During Covid isolation we were all stuck at home in our nests, while taking quarantine walks I noticed the nests being built in late spring of 2020. These nests were strikingly similar to neuron structures and led me to ponder the essence of home as a place of sanctuary and of vulnerability. Tension and friction hold the cup nests of songbirds together, there is no glue, no nails, only pressure of twig against twig. Feathering the nest, preparing for brooding season is its own sacred dance for these expert engineers. Nests are not home for birds, only a place to raise the next generation for if they stay in the nest too long they might be someone else’ prey. Nest Alchemy reflects on climate change and how mating and breeding seasons are affected by human kinds impact. The Nest Neuron prints exhibited in Wind Spirits, a three person exhibition at Penn State University HUB Robeson Gallery in 2021 and at Winterthur Museum in Delaware in 2022.
